Everyone wants to blog. It’s simple, right?

Just write your thoughts, hit publish, and voila! You’re a blogger. Indeed, the process of blogging is rather straightforward — but that doesn’t mean it’s easy.

It takes consistent effort and hard work. But once mastered, blogging is one of the most powerful methods in the modern world for sharing your message with thousands of people and generating an income.

It’s kind of like the Allspark from Transformers, except that instead of bringing Optimus Prime back to life, it has the power to transform your business into a traffic generating, revenue producing machine.

But here’s the problem.

Most entrepreneurs have no clue how to blog.

In fact, most entrepreneur’s blogs are probably hurting their business more than they are helping it.

And it doesn’t need to be this way.

Using your blog to generate traffic, drive conversions, and, ultimately, create profit for your business is not an easy task.

It is, however, relatively simple.

And, if you follow these 7 steps, you will be able to grow your new blog, or transform your existing blog, at a rate you never thought possible.

1. Solve People’s Problems

This first step might seem a little bit simplistic, but it is absolutely essential to the success of your blog.

If you want to use your blog to grow your business or build your personal brand, then you have to realize that your goal is to solve problems.

It is not to entertain yourself or to get your thoughts out on paper (although that can be an aspect of your blog).

It is to help people overcome a challenge they are facing in their lives.

Before you publish each post you need to ask yourself “Who am I helping by writing this? How am I improving their lives? And what problem does this solve?”

When you approach every post with this attitude, your posts will gain more traction and generate more engagement.

Which, of course, will result in more revenue.


2. Be Yourself

Here is the funny thing about the internet.

There have been so many scams and frauds over the past decade that people have developed a very finely tunes b.s. Radar.

And you do not want to be a blip on that radar because you are being inauthentic on your blog.

Be honest with people.

Be authentic, let them see the real you.

Incorporate your own writing style and your own life experiences into your content.

If you are a joker, joke.

If you are serious, be serious.

If you are crass, sarcastic, and a little crazy, who cares! Do it.

I am not a mind reader, but if I had to guess, I would assume you would choose the second one.


Because it is interesting.

Because it evokes emotion.

Because it grabs your attention.

Plain and simple.

If you want your blog to succeed, then you need to become a master of writing captivating headlines.

You need to learn how to write headlines that are so juicy and enticing that people can’t help but read them.

Here are a couple of simple tips that have helped me to create dozens of high performing posts.

  • Numbered lists are great, but keep the number low enough that people will not be overwhelmed.
  • Use controversy, but use it sparingly knowing that it will alienate some readers.
  • She moves in mysterious ways… And so should you. Write headlines that don’t give everything away and readers will be more curious.
  • Make a promise that your readers want, and then fulfill it
  • Use powerful words. E.g. Effortless, Masterful, Exciting to grab people’s attention wherever you are writing on more generic subject matter.


4. Use Sub-Headings To Break Up Your Articles

People don’t really read articles anymore.

They skim them.

Most people simply do not have the attention span to sit down and read every word of a 3,000 word blog post.

So what do they do?

They skim.

They look for big bold subheadings that are relevant to the problem that they need you to solve, and then skim through those subheadings looking for the main points that are contained within.

You need to understand that if you want your content to be as valuable to people as possible and if you want your blog to be successful as possible, you need to master the art of subheadings.

Use subheadings to tell a story throughout your article and make content more easily digestible.

By doing this, your blog will become far more user friendly and you will be able to more efficiently solve the problems that your readers have.


5. Use A/B Tests And Track Your Blog’s Results

One of the most essential steps to succeeding at any part of your business is testing.

If you do things the way that you have always done them, you will continue getting the results that you have always gotten.

This means that whenever you start on your epic quest to grow your blog to new heights, you need to take advantage of A/B testing.

Whether you test different headlines, different designs, or different banner ads, you need to be constantly testing new approaches.

However, this is only the first step.

Once you have initiated a test, you need to keep a careful eye on your analytics and track your results so that you can determine what is working and what is not.

For example, Pat Flynn at smartpassiveincome.com once described in an interview how simply using Google Adwords on one of his sites resulted in lower conversions and a higher bounce rate.

However, as soon as he noticed this trend and realized the cause, he removed the ads on his site and he was able to reverse the damage they had caused.

Of all the steps on the list, this is possibly the most important.

Entrepreneurship is about solving problems and finding better ways to do things.

And the more tests that you run and track in an effort to find the best way to run your blog, the more successful you will be.

6. Leverage Influencers in Your Industry To Grow Your Blog

One of the biggest missed opportunities that plague most bloggers is that they do not properly leverage the power of the influencers in their industry.

There are few actions that will shortcut your road to blogging success as much as getting your content mentioned or shared by an influencer.

But how do you do this?

While there are several approaches to this, the following two methods have worked the best for me.

The first is to create a piece of content that directly discusses the influencer’s current work.

This can be done as either an entire post or part of a bigger work.

Discuss their current projects or work and give your thoughts on what they are doing, suggesting that your reader base checks them out.

The second way that you can leverage an influencer’s audience is to involve them directly in your work.

Find something that they are currently working on that overlaps with your post and email them asking them for a quote.

For both of these tactics, you want to contact the influencer very simply and very respectfully.

You don’t even need to ask for them to share the content (although you can).

Simply email, tweet, or message them a link with a short message expressing your admiration and telling them about your work, and then allow nature to take its course.


7. Market Your Content Like Your Business Depends On It

I don’t care how good of a writer you are, or how many problems your content solves, if people are not exposed to your content on a regular basis then you will never succeed.

While I could write a whole post on content marketing (and have… many times) I will keep it relatively simple for the sake of this article.

Make sure that you are taking advantage of your email list and social media outlets.

Send out recent blog posts across all of your different channels so that your subscribers know whenever you have released new content.

Become a master of Facebook advertising.

Leverage influencer marketing like we talked about earlier.

Write guest posts linking back to your content.

Basically, do anything and everything that you can do to get your blog in front of as many eyeballs as possible.

The success of your blog, and possibly your business, depends on it.



Blogging is a powerful tool.

But you must first learn how to use it.

Just like you wouldn’t allow your child to use a power drill, band saw, or even a hammer without proper instruction, entrepreneurs should not blog without proper guidance.
